science and visions

i installed an extension called leechblock that limits the time i can spend on social media and has a timer in the corner reminding me of how much time i’ve spent on time wasting websites and holy fuck my productivity has fucking sky-rocketed. i’ve gotten so much done the past week it’s ridiculous.

like in the past i’ve always tried outright blocking websites during a certain time (like 9-5 or something) and that never worked cause i would get bored and turn off the block, but allowing myself a reasonable amount of time (i have 1.5 hrs of websites like tumblr/twitter/reddit and 1 hr of youtube/netflix/hulu, but i haven’t been using all of that time for either group) has been super beneficial.

today i got my entire checklist done (and it was a long ass one), and several tasks from TOMORROW’S checklist on top of that, AND i read for fun AND i wrote a ton AND it’s only 9:40pm??? imagine the shit i’ll get done when i whittle down my time even further. look out world, cause ya girl is Accomplishing Shit

The Sims ended up with same-sex relationship support thanks almost entirely to gay programmer Patrick J. Barrett III.

“At the time, it wasn’t considered ‘normal’ to be gay or lesbian,” [Barrett] said. “Some even saw it as dangerous. But in The Sims it was normal and safe to be a gay person. It was the first time we could play a game and be free to see ourselves represented within. It was a magical moment when my first same-sex Sims coupled kissed. I still sometimes wonder how in the world I got away with it.”

The link to the article isn’t working for me so here is a fresh one

I always loved how matter-of-fact the game was about this. It always felt completely logical and seamless to me, and I didn’t know until much later after reading articles like this one that there had been any debate about it at all (though of course in retrospect that was naive). It was very simple: romantic options were open with anyone until you expressed a preference (via interacting romantically with someone), and once you did the game noted it and that was that.

I’ve got Sims 4 now and the gender options are expanded as well: you do have to choose male or female, but you have the option to open up both masculine and feminine clothing/hairstyle options; you can select a masculine or feminine physical frame; you can specify whether the sim can become pregnant, impregnate others, or neither; and you can choose if the sim is able to stand to use the toilet.

Oscar Wilde can’t tell us with words that Dorian Gray is a full out twink so he compares him to Ganymede and Antinous and hopes we know enough Roman gay history to understand.
